Our main feature for a themed Marlon T. Riggs night at the Brattle: Tongues Untied is an experimental doc combining personal narratives, poetry, performance, and Riggs' own commentary to create a powerful and multifaceted portrayal of Black gay life. Combined with 3 of Marlon's short films that speak to the resilience of what it means to be Black and Gay during the late 80's and early 90's, which still ring true today. This is very much a holy grail program for me as a programmer, Marlon's films touched and inspired me as a filmmaker when I first saw them in the early 90s as a young Queer activist. This grouping of films is a must see for anyone interested in Gay history.
Marlon Riggs, with assistance from other gay Black men, especially poet Essex Hemphill, celebrates Black men loving Black men as a revolutionary act. The film intercuts footage of Hemphill reciting his poetry, Riggs telling the story of his growing up, scenes of men in social intercourse and dance, and various comic riffs, including a visit to the "Institute of Snap!thology," where men take lessons in how to snap their fingers: the sling snap, the point snap, the diva snap.

What happens when love dares to exist in a small town, late in life and in a small town at a chicken processing plant? This musical dramedy will get you rooting for our two leads against some flying feathers and a few wet hens.
Helen (Louise Brealey), a reserved, gentle woman, is slowly collapsing under the weight of her inexplicable life. She lives with her torpid husband and his much younger girlfriend (and their new colicky baby), working nights at the local chicken processing plant. There are two things that keep her hanging on: music, and her dear elderly mother-in-law Gwen (Sorcha Cusack), whom she cares for. This dismal state of affairs is interrupted when Joanne (Annabel Scholey), a former neighbour (and Helen’s schoolgirl crush), arrives back in town after her father’s death. His house holds difficult childhood memories for Joanne, of events that many on the street remember, but since she’s been away, she’s become unapologetic in facing down the small-town malice that’s slung at her. What begins as a casual meeting between the two women swiftly turns to friendship and then to love. Joanne is beguiled by Helen’s sweet naiveté, and Helen is in awe of Joanne’s courage and confidence. Their burgeoning relationship is threatened when Helen’s home life is further upended, accompanied by turbulence within the tight-knit group of women who work with her on the factory floor. Soon, Helen and Joanne each face a difficult, perhaps impossible, emotional choice about their futures.

Trans Icon and Warhol superstar Holly Woodlawn plays an actress who just wants to make it big in New York City! Camp and absurdity ensues as we meet a colorful cast of characters in her quest. This was almost lost to time, so be sure to come through! Did we mention the 100 salamis? Also notable is Tally Brown as Holly's downtown foil. and Cameos by LilyTomlin and Bette Midler!
Restored by the Academy Film Archive. Eternal trans icon / Warhol superstar Holly Woodlawn is a total riot in this newly-uncovered Seventies sketch comedy musical. Holly stars as a small-town Kansas girl who tries to make it big — or at least find a roommate — in New York City. SCARECROW has the feel of an undiscovered Robert Downey, Sr. picture, is stacked with Old Hollywood references and also has an epic supporting performance from fellow Warhol scenester Tally Brown. Previously out of circulation for 50 years, SCARECROW has never been on home video or streaming. It’s one of the very first feature films with a trans lead, and has bonus cameos from Bette Midler + Lily Tomlin. Now in 2024, the film is finally ready to find the cult audience it's long deserved.
